Coaching Experience: Linus began coaching in 2000 where he was an assistant coach of a 14’s team that qualified for the Junior Olympics, now called the Junior National Volleyball Championships (JNVC). Since then, he has head and assistant coached multiple teams every year, both in club, parish, and High School. He has a passion for teaching the sport and a drive towards the development of independent scholar athletes, regardless of talent, that is reflected in the time, enthusiasm, and discipline he devotes to those with which he is lucky enough to interact. Linus has been blessed with the athletes to make appearances at the JOVC with two 14’s and a 17’s team in 2000, 2004 and 2007.
In 2010, he moved on to Rockwood Thunder, and qualified for nationals with the Club’s lead 14’s team. In 2011 he took the reins of a 2nd team, and qualified for the JNVC’s by winning the National Division of the Hoosier Mideast National Qualifier. He repeated the feat in 2012 with Rockwood’s 16 Navy team by winning the National Division of the Northeast National Qualifier. He is an active member of the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA), and attends their annual convention every December, where he continues his education through on-court and classroom seminars taught by top coaches at International, National, Collegiate, High School, and Club levels. He is involved with the USA Volleyball High Performance Program, and was voted on the Gateway Region Board as an At-Large Representative in 2011. He is the Youth Programs Director at Rockwood Thunder, and has successfully integrated a pilot volley junior’s development program to St. Louis for 5 to 9 year olds. He entered High School coaching at McCluer HS in 2001 for their freshman team.
He moved to Villa Duchesne High School in 2002, is currently the Junior Varsity Coach, and has been working with Head Varsity Coach, Shane Weber since the Summer of 2008, helping the program finish 2nd place at State in 2009, 2014 and winning State in 2011. Taking together all the teams and seasons since 2000, Linus has over 40 seasons of experience and life lessons to pass on to this next generation of junior scholar athletes.
Linus’ goals as a coach are 2-fold - Volleyball skill development is a goal that will be achieved through drilled biomechanical repetition, intuitive coaching, and high profile competition. However, the greater goal is setting the foundations for the development of a child’s personal philosophy and work ethic that will grow and evolve to serve them beyond their formative years in youth sport.
In Zach’s juniors and college career, he led squads to five national title games. During this span he was a 2-time collegiate All-American, 3-time USAV All-American, and 2-time national MVP. Zach is now head coach at 5-Peat Missouri State Class 4A Champion Lafayette High School. In 2012, Lafayette had a perfect season, never dropping a set in a 40-0 campaign and was ranked #2 nationally by PrepVolleyball.com. Also in 2012 Coach Young was named the Missouri Class 4 High School Coach of the year and National Coach of the Year by both Max Preps and Volleyball Magazine. Young received his Bachelor’s in Education from Lindenwood University and a Master’s in Education from William Woods University.
